Region of Abruzzo

Abruzzo is about two-thirds mountains and one-third hills. It is east of Rome from the center of the Italian Peninsula to the Adriatic coast. It has four provinces; Chieti, L'Aquilla, Pescara, and Teramo. The main grape varieties are the white Trebbiano and the red Montepulciano. Don't be confused by the town in Tuscany called Montepulciano.  There is no similarity between the town name and the Montepulciano grape variety of Abruzzo.  Abruzzo is also known for its quality olive oil, saffron, and pasta. However the Montepulciano d' Abruzzo wine is what it is best known for! To increase quality a few wineries have decreased crop yields and have aged the wines in Barrique French barrels.  We have obtained a Montepulciano d' Abruzzo for one of these producers, Cantina Miglianico in the province of Chieti.  photo by pizzodisevo
 

Marramiero Winery

Between the Adriatic Sea and The Gran Sasso Mountains, at 270 mt., on the hills around Pescara, the Marramiero family has grown vines since the beginning of the last century.  During the 1960's and the 1970's, new vineyards were planted after a careful selection of the already existing vines.  At the beginning of the 1990's, Dante Marramiero completed his master plan to growing grapes, and aging and bottling wine. His children, Enrico and Patrizia, have inherited Dante's passion and founded Marramiero Farm in collaboration with the oenologist Romeo Taraborrelli and the manager Antonio Chiavaroli.  The Marramiero wines are the result of Dante's original vision. Enrico and Patrizia continue the family's love for the land, and the devotion to success by combining ancient winemaking traditions with modern winemaking techniques and technology.

Inferi is the place where souls stay in Dante Alighieri's Divina Commedia.  Also it is the name of this wonderful elite red wine made by Marramiero winery in Abruzzo.  Worthy of founder Dante Marramiero's dream, and from a single vineyard of great character comes Inferi Montepulciano D'Abruzzo. Shimmering red color, with darker sparkling reflections. Just the right balance of cherry and darker fruit mingle with vanilla, tobacco, and licorice on the nose and on the palate. Warm, rich and harmonious on the finish with an enticing balance of fruit, acidity and dryness.   Serve  with pasta, mushrooms and truffles, with beef and game, with mature cheese, salami and Italian ham.

From select grape bunches of the estates oldest vines, winemaker Romeo Taraborrelli creates a rich, beautifully balanced superior Trebbiano D'Aboruzzo wine. The tremendous fragrance and succulent flavors are highlighted by melon, apricot and citrus in a pleasant almost creamy body. The finish is balanced, with a crisp citrus and sherbert flavors.
