Region of Piedmont (Piemonte)

Piedmont is Italy's western most region and borders Switzerland and France at the Alps. Piedmont literally translates to foot of the mountain.  Vineyards are planted on the hills versus the plains and are harvested with some of the lowest yields in Italy.  Its wines can be likened to the wines of Burgundy France.  Piedmont is known for it small, high quality wineries, somewhat like Burgundy only more consistent from producer to producer. The average vineyard is 2.5 acres per owner. Piedmont grows more different varieties of grapes and therefore makes more different wines than Burgundy.  The prominent red grapes varieties are: Nebbiolo, the grape of Barolo ("King of Wines") and Barbaresco, Barbera and Dolcetto (sweet little one).  The prominent
white grape varieties are Cortese (Gavi) and Moscato (Moscato di Asti).
Along with Tuscany, Piedmont has the reputation of producing the finest wines in Italy.

Nina and Renato Ferrero run this small winery. LaMorra is considered by many the best spot in Piedmont. Ferrero has two vineyards, one on the hill Manzoni the other on the hill Gattera. The area is also know as Annunziata.  Nina and Renato also have two apartments for rent to tourists. A great place to stay. 
We believe that Ferrero wines are equal to and better than wines costing two and three times as much!

Ferrero's Manzoni in LaMorra, Piedmonte  makes only 2,700 bottles per year.  Lots of fruit & vanilla flavor.  Likened to the Gaja Barolo, but what a value!   2003 was a very hot year producing a very well balanced wine ready to drink.  The wine was aged in Barrique, a 59 gallon French Barrel.  Always 100% Nebbiolo grapes from the Manzoni vineyard.  Only 50 cases for the USA!

Barolo Gattera E Luciani 2004

The Ferrero vineyard on the Gattera hill in LaMorra produces only 8,000 bottles per year. Gattera Barolo is traditionally made, in large oak casks giving it light oak,  showcasing the Nebbiolo grape.  2003 was very hot so the Barolo 2003 is ready to drink sooner the usual. This wine is excellent!  My friend Dan Ross is the only USA importer. Only 25 cases or 300 bottles for the USA.

Tenuta Olim Bauda
